Case Study: Solving a Leaking Water Heater for Robert in Maryland

Introduction: Robert, a resident of Maryland (2287), recently noticed that his water heater was leaking. Concerned about the potential damage and safety hazards, he searched for a reliable plumbing service and found us through our Newcastle Magnet ad.

Assigned Technician: Our experienced technician Theran was assigned to the job due to his expertise in handling water heater issues.

The Problem & Solution: Upon investigation, Theran discovered that Robert’s existing water heater had irreparably ruptured. He also found that there was no pressure limiting valve on the cold water inlet as required. After conducting a water pressure test, it was revealed that the incoming cold water mains had excessive pressure at 600kpa.

To solve this issue, Theran presented two options to Robert – installing a new water heater or installing a pressure regulating valve at either the meter or directly on the system itself. After discussing with our client, it was decided to go with a Rheem Stellar 130l (330l hot in first hour) and installation of a pressure regulating valve at the meter.

The Job Process:

  • We supplied and installed a new water heater in the same location as before.
  • We isolated supply services and disconnected hot & cold water and gas supply.
  • We drained all remaining water from the old system before removing it completely.
  • We disposed of the old hot water system environmentally friendly manner.
  • A new isolating valve was installed on the cold-water supply line along with a pressure regulating valve at the meter.
  • The new Rheem Stellar 130l unit was then installed and connected to both hot & cold water lines.
  • We also installed a T&PR valve and drain, as well as a tempering valve to ensure the water temperature did not exceed 50 degrees Celsius (as required by law).
  • After filling up the new water heater and checking for any leaks, we connected the gas supply and commissioned the unit to ensure it was working correctly at the desired temperature.
  • Finally, we cleaned up after ourselves to leave Robert’s home in its original state.
