The Job Description & Solution
Matt arrived on site at Ilona’s home and conducted thermal imaging which revealed moisture present during inspection. After speaking with Ilona, it was discovered that third-party plumber had previously attempted repairs on the shower drains 4-5 years ago.
To determine where exactly the leak was coming from, pressure testing was conducted on the shower which passed without any drop in pressure. However, splash testing failed as water could be seen entering through gaps in sealant/grouting between wall tiles and around the shower waste drain. Further flood testing also failed due to gaps in silicon/grout around floor tiles themselves.
A crack was also noted in one of the floor tiles itself. Upon further inspection by opening up ceiling with permission from Ilona, it was discovered that the third-party plumber had used silicon to fix the trap, which is not an approved jointing method for drainage pipes.
Given the multiple issues with the shower, Matt recommended a complete renovation as the best solution. This would involve removing tiles and reinstating waterproofing membrane, as well as replacing drainage pipes.
